Visit Sharjah’s rain room - You won’t need an umbrella

Designed by the Sharjah Art Foundation and installed at Al Majarah, near Buhaira Corniche, the endless downpour uses 1,200 litres of self-cleaning recycled water. Using special trigger motion sensors that detect movement, the rain pauses wherever people walk. Chase the rain all you want, you’ll never catch it.

The heat is here. We wouldn’t mind a bit of cooler weather, but the UAE doesn’t usually get its fair share of rain. However, Sharjah’s new installation is giving us plenty of wet weather thanks to its new indoor endless downpour of water.

The new exhibit lets people experience a constant indoor rainstorm. The catch? You won’t have to worry about getting wet so you can ditch that umbrella.

Built on an area of 1,460 sq m, the site is now permanently installed at Al Majarah, near Buhaira Corniche.

It uses 1,200 litres of self-cleaning recycled water that provides a continuous stream of rainfall.

The unique room was created by Random International and designed by the Sharjah Art Foundation. The first Rain Room was launched at Barbican, London from 2012 to 2013. It was a major hit, and has been presented in New York, Shanghai and Los Angeles over the past few years.

His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the Rain Room yesterday (Sunday April 29) and walked through himself.

It will now be permanently and exclusively housed here in the Middle East. Lucky us.

When rain does fall in the UAE it’s quite a novelty, however, we’ll be sure to get plenty of photos in the rain without getting wet.
